Bell: What's up Canada? Liberals could win the election, are you nuts?

What the heck is going on?

Oh Canada. Tell me it’s not real.

Tell me there is some massive error in the arithmetic.

I don’t want to contemplate the alternative, that many Canadians have simply lost their minds.

Putting the Liberals back in power.

Even thinking of the possibility? Even thinking of them holding Conservatives to a minority government? Even thinking they will get off with less than a thrashing?

Is this a cruel joke?

It’s not April 1 on the calendar, is it?

Is there an amnesia pandemic sweeping Canada?

But here is the latest math staring us in the face.

The nose count is from the good folks at Leger.

Other polls have come our way, so this one does not surprise.

The trend all over the nose-counting universe is going in the wrong direction.

The Liberals, under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for three more weeks, are still trailing Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives but now by only nine points.

Yes, nine percentage points. Not 25, not 20.

Mark Carney will almost certainly be the next leader of the Liberals.

How do the numbers look then?

But there was such a huge lead for the Conservatives, week after week, month after month.

The numbers were out of this world, over the top, a massive majority Conservative government.

There was talk the Liberals wouldn’t even come in second place.

There was even chatter about how they could be wiped out as a major force in Canadian politics.

Canada IS broken. Cost of living IS an issue. Cost of housing IS an issue, for many.

Public safety IS an issue.

The country IS in worse shape after almost a decade under Trudeau.

Nothing has changed and it sure looked like even Liberal voters had enough.

Tall foreheads tell us there would be a little bounce for the Liberals. Often happens when an unpopular leader quits.

So there is was a bounce. Fine.

But then came U.S. President Donald Trump and the tariff threats.

Liberals hate the man’s guts, many loathe him to the point of derangement, but they should be sending Trump a thank-you card and a bucket of his favourite KFC.

Now, we are told, it is all about saving Canada.

Don’t criticize. The time is not for criticism. The enemy is at the gates.

Bell: What's up Canada? Liberals could win the election, are you nuts?

You aren’t a traitor, are you?

Get behind the team, the Liberal team.

The Liberals are wrong-headed, unprincipled and have screwed up in so many ways but they are smart enough to know their butt is on the line.

They will wrap themselves in the flag.

They will say what you want to hear.

Don’t want a carbon tax? No carbon tax or at least nothing called a carbon tax.

Want pipelines? From the Liberals who brought in a No More Pipelines law and were in power when two major pipelines went nowhere, they now want pipelines.

Pipelines, they love pipelines. Who said they didn’t love pipelines?

For the people who want to phase out the oilsands, oil and gas is now a valuable resource to the country, the economic engine of the nation, so important Canada should use it as a bargaining chip in the tariff fight with Trump.

Want a toughening up of the border?

Liberals now say they want a toughening up of the border after doing the exact opposite year after year after year.

Want a strong military? Liberals say that’s what they want and it’s all B.S. but who cares?

The words are just words and in the mass hysteria people cling to those words no matter how bogus.

The Liberals say times have changed and Canada needs change and they now represent change and not the people who have been fighting for change for years.

These mental gymnastics are so easy to pull off when you have absolutely no conviction.

The Liberals are making a bet.

The Liberals bet Canadians won’t tear themselves away from the latest Netflix series long enough to figure out what’s happening.

The Liberals bet Canadians will be so overwhelmed by fear and loathing in the present they will forget the past.

Enter the next Liberal move. Putting lipstick on the Liberal pig.

The brand of lipstick is Mark Carney.

Mr. International Banker and Financier who may have the charisma of a gnat but he will be cast by Liberals as the steady hand on the wheel through this storm.

A writer suggests Carney’s task will be to get enough Canadians to forget the last nine years of the Liberals.

Not so hard. Apparently, many Canadians can’t remember the last nine months.

Before press time, noted nose counter David Coletto from Abacus Data offers some hope.

In his poll, the Liberals are up seven points in a month and on the move but the Conservatives still lead by 19 points.

Liberals on the move? What’s wrong with people?
